VA Offers Free Home Care Caregiver Benefit for Vets

Welcome to my new column! As mentioned in my introduction in the last Seniors section, I will be covering a variety of topics surrounding home care. I want to bring attention to a very underused benefit for veterans, and that is, free home care service in your home.

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has taken a remarkable initiative to provide free home care benefits for those who have served our nation and now require assistance with daily living tasks or medical care.

For veterans recuperating from injuries, managing chronic conditions, or simply in need of a helping hand with daily activities, home care caregivers can be an invaluable source of support. Veterans will need to reach out to their local VA, sign up with the VA Health Care System and coordinate with one of the VA physicians to obtain approval. Veterans will still be able to retain their current doctors and healthcare plans, ensuring continuity in their medical care.

Initiating home care services through the VA is a straightforward process. Veterans can apply for various home care options, each designed to cater to specific requirements including:

• Skilled Nursing: Registered nurses or licensed practical nurses are equipped to provide skilled medical care, including wound care, medication management, and IV therapy.

The application process involves contacting the local VA Medical Center or VA social worker. Following an eligibility assessment, a VA representative collaborates with the veteran to create a personalized care plan and identifies a credentialed State licensed caregiver agency to match with the veteran. You can also choose your own credentialed agency that is licensed by the State.
